Texas football got fantastic news from senior defensive back Jahdae Barron as he revealed on Jan. 13 that he will return to school for the final year of his eligibility in 2024. On the evening of January 13, Barron made the announcement on Instagram that he will spend one more season in Texas in 2024.
The news that the final two players they were waiting on to reveal their NFL Draft choices this week brought great joy to head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff. Quinn Ewers, a redshirt sophomore quarterback, and Barron both made announcements this week indicating they will be returning to school in 2024.

Before the January 15 deadline for underclassmen, the Texas staff had to wait until Barron was the final choice. This secondary, which is about to compete in its first SEC season, will benefit greatly from his return to Texas in 2024.
In the previous few seasons, Barron was possibly Texas’s best cover wide receiver. Since the 2022 season began, Barron has played more coverage snaps than any other Texas defensive back. He can play basically every position in the secondary while thriving in one-on-one coverage and contesting space.
Barron will look to boost his NFL Draft stock for 2025
According to reports that surfaced earlier this weekend, Barron was thinking about going back to school for a second season in order to increase his 2025 draft prospects in light of the NFL’s criticism. Barron should be considered a middle-round selection at the very least in the 2025 NFL Draft if he plays DB for Texas in 2024 like he did the past several seasons.
Now that they will be joining the SEC for the upcoming season, Texas’s secondary appears quite strong.
