Report: As a result of…, Derrick White and the Celtics have finally agreed to a new contract.
Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe reports that the Boston Celtics and Derrick White have been negotiating a contract extension.
According to Himmelsbach, “Derrick White and the Boston Celtics have been talking about a contract extension.” Although discussions are still going on, nothing seems to be coming up soon. The deadline for all parties to come to a decision about extending White’s contract is October 23.
White will remain around for a while even if an extension is reached before the regular season begins, despite reports that both parties are working to come to an agreement before the new season begins. He will become a free agent in the summer of 2025 after his current contract with the Cs expires at the end of the next season. He is expected to earn $19.6 million in the 2024–2025 campaign in addition to $18.4 million this year.
The Cs will be allowed to sign White to an extension next year, which would run until June 30, 2025, if an agreement is not reached within this window.
In a transaction that sent Romeo Langford, Josh Richardson, Boston’s 2022 first-round pick, and a 2028 first-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs, the Colorado native joined the Celtics during the 2022 trade deadline.
White has had an impact on the Cs since his arrival. The 29-year-old has started 74 games for Boston in 108 appearances. In his limited minutes, he has played well, scoring 12.1 points, dishing out 3.8 assists, pulling down 3.5 rebounds, and making 44.9% of his field goals and 36.5% of his three-pointers.
For the Celtics, White has also been an excellent defender. He was selected to the NBA’s All-Defensive Second Team for the previous campaign. Expectations are high for his output this year on both ends as Boston expects
The Cs need to lock him down for the long run because teams who overspend will find it very difficult to play under the new collective bargaining agreement. They would be severely limited in their ability to obtain elite talent, making it doubtful that they could ever succeed in replacing White.
