Michael van Gerwen Will Not Play His Next Dart Game Due To…

Michael van Gerwen’s chances of attending the Premier League Finals Night at London’s O2 next week are now uncertain due to a left shoulder ailment.

The injury occurred during the reigning champion Van Gerwen’s 6-3 victory over Chris Dobey in Aberdeen. He raced out to a 5-0 lead before faltering in the closing stages due to soreness.

The six-time champion was not allowed to face Dimitri Van den Bergh in the last four, since the Dutchman finished in third place despite needing treatment after the match.

In a thrilling match, Van den Bergh secured Play-Off qualifying with his victory in the final, capping off an incredible Premier League season.

After astonishingly making it to the ninth consecutive final of the 2023 season, Gerwyn Price became just the fifth player in Premier League history to finish first in the league phase.

The Welshman, who averaged 103 and won with an incredible 129 checkout, started the match with a decisive 6-2 triumph against hometown favourite Peter Wright.

Nathan Aspinall, who was matched point-for-point with ‘The Iceman’ before to facing Price in the semi-final, also averaged 103 in his 6-1 thumping of competition Clayton.

But in a gruelling battle, 2020 runner-up Aspinall lost 6-3 to the league leader, failing to earn the victory he required to guarantee a top four position.

Before travelling to The Granite City, just two players in this year’s competition lacked a nightly victory: Belgian sensation Van den Bergh. However, he made up for that loss on the last night of league phase play.

With a 6-4 victory to start his season, the former World Matchplay champion stopped Michael Smith’s nine-match winning streak in the Premier League by holding off a late comeback.

Van Gerwen was subsequently forced to retire, giving Van den Bergh a bye into Thursday’s final at P&J Live.

This set up a matchup with the top-seeded Price for the Night 16 championship, and it was in an exciting final leg decider that Van den Bergh prevailed to win the £10,000 top prize on Scottish soil.

“I think I gave it everything I had, and tonight it worked out for me,” said Van den Bergh, who finished the season one place ahead of Dobey.

“I seized the opportunity while I got it. Well done, Gezzy. He once again shown his class, but I persisted, and I’m overjoyed to have won.

“I’m flying around Europe every week for the first time in my Premier League career. Even though I tried my hardest and it didn’t work out, I never gave up.

“I have to say thank you so much to the PDC. I felt really honoured to be part of this, and while it didn’t happen this time, nobody can say I will never be back.”
