The San Antonio Spurs ended an 18-game losing streak on Friday by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 129-115. Gregg Popovich’s side put up a very well-balanced scoring performance headed by Devin Vassell, who made just 19 shots but scored 36 points and five triples. The Spurs’ most significant player, though, was Victor Wembanyama, who took advantage of Anthony Davis’s absence on both sides to record 13 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks.
LeBron James, who made a comeback for Los Angeles following his absence from the team’s Wednesday game, was questioned about San Antonio’s rookie star following the game. After witnessing Wembanyama beat G League Ignite in a special showcase last autumn, the King reportedly referred to the Frenchman as a “alien,” praising his exceptional combination of size,
James didn’t go into much detail on his earlier remarks regarding Wembanyama on Friday. Spurs fans should be happy with the compliment he gave Wembanyama, though, considering that he is perhaps the best player of all time.
“Unique ability,” James remarked. “They struck gold with this one.”
After a bothersome left calf injury, James returned on Friday, putting up 23 points, seven rebounds, and 14 assists. Despite having one of his best productive seasons of his illustrious career, he struggled from the field, shooting only 7 of 17.
Following a split of their two-game set this week, LeBron James and the Lakers will play Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs one more this season. At Crypto.com Arena on February 23, they will play their second encounter.
