Manchester United’s Harry Maguire expressed his gratitude towards English fans while insisting he is “really appreciated” across the football world.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Despite facing criticism from certain United supporters, the defender feels valued in the football world and is honoured to be able to pursue his childhood dream of playing for his country.
Along with remembering the great moments he had as an England international, he also made the suggestion that the Three Lions should now win significant prizes.
WHAT MAGUIRE SAID
Speaking to reporters, Maguire said: “Listen, representing my nation means everything to me. It’s an enormous honour and a great privilege for me; it’s what I always wanted as a child, so whenever a game comes up, I want to play it for as long as possible, start it, and support the boys.”
“Since I made my debut, the team and I have had a wonderfully good six years, but we now simply need to cross the finish line. I am aware of the dressing room’s appreciation for me. I’m aware of the respect I receive from managers, coaches, and players in the football industry, as well as the support I receive from former players. I know I’m appreciated by the England fans whom I have made many memories over the years and that’s the most important thing for me.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
After Erik ten Hag joined the Red Devils last season, the 30-year-old was shunned and only played in 16 Premier League games, totaling just 759 minutes on the field. He never gave up though. Ever since Lisandro Martinez was declared ineligible for play at the end of September, Maguire has established himself as a regular on the team sheet. He was rumoured to be leaving the team in the summer when West Ham allegedly expressed interest in signing him, but he opted to fight for his position.
WHAT NEXT FOR HARRY MAGUIRE?
The former Leicester player will play for his team on Sunday in a pivotal matchup between Ten Hag’s team and Everton. Seven points behind leaders Manchester City, United is presently ranked sixth in the Premier League standings.
