Raymond van Barneveld requires medical treatment
Thirty minutes after Ryan Searle defeated him 6-1 in the opening round of the event, the five-time world champion unexpectedly fell unwell at the Marshall venue.
Raymond van Barneveld, the darts legend, experienced a health scare at the Milton Keynes players’ championship Super Series.
After a brief retirement, the five-time world champion returned to the Professional Darts Corporation circuit. About half an hour after Ryan Searle defeated him 6-1 in the opening round, he unexpectedly became unwell at the Marshall venue.
Despite receiving medical attention from paramedics, Barney—who has a history of diabetes-related problems—was not transported to a hospital.
Play was halted on all boards, and the 53-year-old former postman went back to his hotel room on the stadium:mk complex to be watched.
Barney, who was given a diabetes diagnosis in 2009, was reportedly marking a different game when he became unwell.
The Dutchman, who is incredibly well-liked by both supporters and opponents, has subjected himself to rigorous gym routines and diets in an effort to be in better shape.
He famously remarked, “I’m in my fifties now, and I’m not getting any younger. I’m not that young anymore.” I’ll be working hard at the gym every day from now on.
Van Barneveld, who has previously discussed his struggles with diabetes—specifically, issues with his weight, his vision during performances, and abrupt drops in his energy—retired in December 2019 following his shocking loss to American outsider Darin Young at the PDC World Championship.
However, he made a U-turn a few months later, and just this past month, he prevailed in the PDC Q School to get his Tour card back.
He is on track to qualify for this year’s World Championship after winning one of the early Super Series events in Bolton as a result of his return.
Regarding Barney’s fright, the PDC released the following statement: “Raymond van Barneveld received medical treatment after becoming ill at Friday’s Players Championship 8.”
“Van Barneveld needed medical attention after being sick in the arena at the PDC Super Series 2 event in Milton Keynes, where he was defeated in the opening round.
“He was treated by paramedics but has not required hospital treatment, and returned to his hotel room at the Marshall Arena to be further monitored.
“Play was suspended whilst Van Barneveld received treatment before resuming at 1445 GMT.”
